Texas Authors Institute of History

A Unique Museum that saves history, inspires the future, depth and gives to the present..

Lareida Buckley was born and raised in Caldwell, Texas, in Burleson County, where her family ran a dairy farm for generations. When she was nine years old, her father was elected sheriff of the county, and the family moved to town into the county jail living quarters, where they lived through her college years, her father’s death on the job, and her mother’s term as sheriff. Stories From the Sheriff’s Daughter is a fictionalized account of those coming-of-age years and her interactions with prisoners, lawmen, politics, and small-town life.

Lareida graduated with honors from Texas A&M in 1968 (Gig ‘em!), starting with one of the first classes to allow women. She went on to the Graduate School of Library Science at the University of Hawaii. Living in Hawaii, Lareida had a country mail route and pursued writing in every way available to her. After retirement, she wrote her coming-of-age story as a novel and got a publishing deal from TCU Press on her first submission. It’s encouraging for everyone…it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.
