Stephen grew up along the Blanco River in a house that his grandparents built as a young married couple in the late 1890s. He graduated Texas A&M University, class of 1965, and was commissioned as a 2LT in the U.S. Army. He served with the 101st Airborne Division in Viet Nam in 1967-68. During his professional life he worked as a Fisheries Biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, mined land reclamation with Texas Utilities, and Executive Director of the Texas Mining and Reclamation Association He and his wife, Kennie, have two married children and seven grandkids They currently live in that house his grandparents built along the Blanco River.
